Justin Fields might get an opportunity to really show the Pittsburgh Steelers what he’s made of and potentially steal the starting spot from veteran quarterback Russell Wilson.
Okay, we’re probably reaching here… but the former Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos QB was unable to practice this Thursday after waking up with a calf injury.
\Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters as much today, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Russ’s absence saw Fields take the first-team reps.
Russell Wilson Has Been Very Reliable As A Quarterback
Russell Wilson has been pretty reliable in terms of availability over his career. He missed two games with a hamstring injury in 2022 and, in 10 years with the Seahawks, only missed three.
While he was mostly available for Denver, his time there was disappointing as he did little to justify the $245 million contract he signed before he was traded.

The team missed the playoffs in both of his seasons there. He set career lows with 16 passing touchdowns and a QB rating of 84.4 in 2022, with the team going 5-12.
They improved to 8-9 last season, but it wasn’t good enough to get them in the playoffs.
The 35-year-old joined the Steelers as a free agent after being released earlier in the offseason, signing a one-year deal on a veteran’s minimum.
Tomlin said earlier this year he was in “pole position” to start but his injury just might see the younger quarterback steal a march on him in their competition for the starting job.
