A rebuilding AFC team could reportedly be in on the Russell Wilson sweepstakes this upcoming offseason, should the nine-time Pro Bowler hit the open market.
The Denver Broncos are expected to release Wilson after this season and restart at QB. The 35-year-old was benched for Denver’s final two regular season games because of Wilson’s refusal to adjust the injury guarantees in his contract.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the rebuilding New England Patriots are a “sleeper” team for the future Hall of Famer:
“The Atlanta Falcons are the proverbial “quarterback away” from contending. They have several intriguing players on offense and could go the veteran route, depending on whom Atlanta hires as head coach. There are other potential sleepers: Pittsburgh, which is between quarterbacks and might not be completely sold on Pickett; and New England, which probably needs a veteran and a draft pick for the position.”
The Patriots have already made one drastic change, parting ways with legendary head coach Bill Belichick after 24 years last week. Inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo, who’s been on the Patriots’ staff since 2019, was promoted to the head coaching duties.
The Patriots are expected to move on from 2021 first-round pick Mac Jones, who had a miserable 2023 season that culminated with him losing the starting job to backup Bailey Zappe. Jones has one year left on his rookie contract, so the Patriots can easily release him if they don’t find a taker via the trade market.

Denver would have owed Wilson $37 million in guarantees in 2025 if he suffered an injury. The fact they didn’t want to take that risk is a strong indicator that Sean Payton and company are more than ready to part ways with the Super Bowl-winning QB.
