Well, this is certainly interesting.
In a bit of a surprise move, the Tennessee Titans announced on Tuesday that they had fired head coach Mike Vrabel. The 48-year-old was just two years removed from winning Coach of the Year honors after guiding Tennessee to the AFC’s top seed at 12-5.
Before his firing, there was plenty of speculation that Vrabel would potentially get traded, given his value as one of the NFL’s premier head coaches. But according to ESPN’s Diana Russini, Vrabel wasn’t traded because the Titans thought it “was too complicated and would take too long.”
Russini added that Vrabel apparently never sought an exit from the Titans, adding another layer of confusion to the organization’s decision.
It’s simply difficult to comprehend the Titans’ decision in handling the entire Vrabel saga. For one, he’s among the best coaches of the last six years, having led a longtime struggling Tennessee squad to four straight winning seasons (2018 to 2021).
The Titans reached the 2019 AFC Championship as the sixth seed and won consecutive AFC South division titles in 2020 and 2021. If Ryan Tannehill didn’t miss the final stretch in 2022, Tennessee would have likely won a third straight division crown.

If the Titans wanted to move on from Vrabel, they could have easily sought and received some compensation for him. Instead, a lucky NFL team out there can now hire Vrabel without paying anything to Tennessee.
