A top NFL insider thinks that one of the league’s most beloved and respected head coaches could be on the hot seat entering the 2024 season.
Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has guided the team to consecutive winning seasons and playoff appearances. 2023 marked the first time where Miami successfully qualified for the postseason in consecutive seasons in 22 years.
Despite McDaniel’s early success in South Beach, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio believes that the 40-year-old could be on the hot seat in 2024, along with general manager Chris Grier:
“The reality for the Dolphins is the same that it is for every team, except the Packers. One person ultimately makes the big decisions. In Miami, that one person is Stephen Ross…
If the Dolphins don’t deliver in 2024, only Ross knows what he’ll do. But he’ll be closing in on another birthday when the next season ends. And he might decide, “I’m about to be 85 years old and I want results now.”
Especially with coaches like Carroll, Bill Belichick, and Mike Vrabel available. So are McDaniel and Grier on the hot seat? Only one person truly knows. Based on how 2024 goes, the rest of us will find out.”
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross fired head coach Brian Flores in 2022 even though the latter led them to back-to-back winning seasons. So it’s not a stretch to think that Miami will need to go on a playoff run here in 2024 if McDaniel and/or Grier are to make it to 2025.
But the odds of finding a better head coach than McDaniel aren’t exactly great. He turned Tua Tagovailoa into a star quarterback after two uneven seasons to begin his career, not to mention Tyreek Hill’s historic 2023 season and the explosive running back tandem of Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane.

McDaniel is also well-liked among his players, coaching peers and media for his relaxed and humorous personality. If Ross were to fire him, somebody else would surely be happy to make McDaniel their next head coach.
