Jimmy Garoppolo began his NFL career with the New England Patriots and it appeared he was on the cusp of returning right back where it all began.
According to Seth Wickersham’s new book highlighting the Patriots’ dynastic reign, “It’s Better to Be Feared,” the New England front office called the 49ers to discuss Jimmy G’s trade value on Day 1 of the 2021 draft.
According to the book, the Patriots offered a second-round pick, but San Francisco wanted a first rounder.
Wickersham revealed that during the 2020 Free Agency period, Tom Brady desired a return to the Bay Area and had the 49ers as his top destination. However, the 49ers were more than comfortable with keeping Jimmy G, especially after they had recently extended him.
Brady has gone on to win a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while the 49ers have gone just 8-14 since the move.
In his first season as a full-time starter in 2019, the former Pats backup led the Niners to a Super Bowl LIV appearance. Jimmy Garoppolo has gone just 2-3 this season while facing yet another lower-body injury with a calf contusion in Week 4.

With the 15th overall pick in the draft, New England selected former Alabama standout Mac Jones in this past year’s draft, so they may just be out of the Jimmy G market.
