Rather than outright fire legendary head coach Bill Belichick, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft may use a genius strategy to net his team some valuable compensation for the future Hall of Famer.
Speaking on NBC Boston’s “Quick Slant” (h/t the Sports Business Journal), Patriots insider Tom E. Curran reports that the team could attempt to “make a bidding war emerge” for the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach.
Many expect Kraft to fire or “part ways” with Belichick after the season. New England has already clinched its third losing and non-playoff season in four years, leading to speculation that Belichick will leave the organization after Week 18.
If that happens, Belichick would become the top name available on the head coach free agent market. Since he’s still under contract, the Pats could look to shop Belichick’s rights instead of firing him and watching the 71-year-old sign elsewhere without any compensation in return.
