There are currently five NFL head coach vacancies, but many fans and pundits believe that more should open up following Super Wild Card Weekend.
Some especially think the Los Angeles Chargers should move on from Brandon Staley after blowing a 27-0 lead in their Wild Card Round loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday. But a new report indicates that Staley will return to LA for at least one more season.
Speaking on the latest edition of his podcast (h/t Steve DelVecchio of Larry Brown Sports), The Ringer’s Bill Simmons said he heard from sources that the Chargers may simply be “way too cheap” to can Staley and replace him with a big name like Sean Payton:
“The good news if you’re a Chargers fan is (Saturday’s meltdown) opens the door for Sean Payton, which is all that shoulder matter. Now, I’ve asked some people who know stuff. Everyone who knows things seems to think the Chargers are way too cheap to fire Staley and then pay Sean Payton. This is a team that’s like a tenant in somebody else’s football stadium, so who knows?”
Staley was the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator for the 2020 season, and his success there landed him the Chargers’ head coaching role. Though he’s led them to consecutive winning seasons to begin his tenure, the fact is that the Chargers have underachieved with a star-studded roster.
But this latest report from Simmons suggests that the Chargers won’t be making a coaching change, so Staley just might get another chance to show why he belongs in Los Angeles long-term.
