The number of teams needing a quarterback behind center for the upcoming season has dwindled considerably since the offseason began, and that is just bad luck for the 49ers and Jimmy Garoppolo.
The 49ers planned to have Jimmy Garoppolo traded by the start of the new league year, freeing up $25.5 million in cap space and turning everything over to second-year quarterback Trey Lance. When the season ended, the 49ers appeared to be in a good position to part ways with Jimmy G and get something back in return.
However, the dominoes didn’t fall the way many anticipated, and the 49ers, victims of bad luck, still have Garoppolo on their roster in late March.
Now, according to an NFL source with NBC’s Pro Football Talk, the 49ers will probably have to cut Garoppolo.
The Niners can definitely wait since none of Jimmy Garoppolo’s guaranteed salary comes due until just before Week 1. Releasing Garoppolo would result in just $1.4 million in dead money, but an instant $25 million in cap space.
When the 49ers’ season ended with a loss in the NFC Championship Game to the Los Angeles Rams, there was a clear list of quarterback-needy teams who likely would be interested in Garoppolo’s services.

Most of those teams have since signed or traded for their next QB. The NFL Draft is coming up and Jimmy G is not likely to get traded before or during that night.
