Many teams have tanked their season in order to secure a top draft pick, but the Miami Dolphins are so blatant with it that everybody can see exactly what they are trying to do. Since they are so committed to losing, the NFL competition committee may explore ways to prevent it going forward.
A source told Daniel Kaplan of The Athletic that the NFL competition committee is planning to take a closer look at the way the Dolphins are tanking the 2019 season.
“By all accounts the Miami Dolphins are tanking, and to an extreme not seen before in previous iterations of clubs losing to gain cap space and draft picks. So much so that it has gotten the attention of the NFL competition committee.
“The committee will probably have the questions posed to it again, if not by the media, maybe by teams,” a league source said. “It’s likely the competition committee will have to address this issue.”
It’s not exactly known what the competition committee could do to thwart things like this in the future, other than adopt a NBA-style draft lottery that doesn’t award the worst team with the worst record, rather have it come by chance.
Just because a team gets a top pick doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll make the right selection as there are far more draft busts in the NFL than there are in the NBA.
This 2019 Dolphins team might not win a single game this season and still strike out in the Draft. After several trades they’ve made, they have a bunch of chances to get something right.
