One of the best parts of the annual NFL Draft is the special hugs and handshakes that players perform with Commissioner Roger Goodell upon hearing their names called.
Unfortunately, there may be no “Draft Hugs” at the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit, due to a health-related matter regarding the commissioner.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the NFL commissioner underwent surgery on his back three weeks ago. Though Schefter noted that Goodell “has recovered well”, it’s unclear if he’ll be able to perform the iconic draft hugs this year.
If Goodell is not in a condition to be able to perform the hugs, here’s a reminder of what we may be missing out on this year:

If Goodell can’t perform the hugs, hopefully the players will be able to come up with some other crafty handshakes and moves to express their excitement. But it simply won’t be the same energy if draft hugs are on hold this year.
The NFL Draft begins tonight at Hart Plaza and Campus Martius Park, and the event will conclude on Saturday. The Chicago Bears own the No. 1 selection and are expected to use the pick on USC quarterback Caleb Williams.
The 2024 NFL Draft Should Be A Dandy
This year’s NFL Draft is loaded with elite quarterback prospects, generational pass-catchers, grade-A offensive linemen, dynamic edge rushers and pure lockdown corners.
So it’ll be awfully interesting to see how the entire board plays out, because it’s awfully difficult to predict what most of the 32 teams will do. On top of that, you have QB-needy teams like the New York Giants, Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings and Las Vegas Raiders who may all attempt to trade up.
There are always a handful of shocking blockbuster trades that transpire on day one of the draft, too. And who knows? We might see several big-named stars (Tee Higgins? Brandon Aiyuk?) get traded tonight.
The bottom line is that you won’t want to miss day one of the draft. It promises to be a dandy in more ways than one.
