Multiple NFL coaches are reportedly convinced that the San Francisco 49ers would be a budding dynasty if they used the No. 3 pick in 2021 differently.
The 49ers gave up a king’s ransom to the Miami Dolphins back in 2021 to move up into the No. 3 spot of that year’s draft. In return, Miami received the No. 12 pick, 2022 and 2023 first-rounders plus a 2022 third-round pick.
San Francisco used that pick on North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance, who wound up making four starts with the franchise before getting traded to the Dallas Cowboys ahead of the 2023 season.

Speaking on DNVR Sports, NFL Network’s James Palmer reports that multiple NFL coaches think the 49ers “would have won multiple Super Bowls by now” if Kyle Shanahan took Mac Jones with the No. 3 pick instead of Lance:
Palmer explained that Shanahan actually wanted Jones but was convinced not to take the Alabama product because of his limited ceiling.

The 49ers wound up finding their long-term replacement for Jimmy Garoppolo in Brock Purdy, the final draft pick of 2022. Obviously, there’s no telling how much of a difference Jones might have made in a Shanahan-led offense as opposed to Lance or Purdy.
But seeing how close Purdy got the 49ers to a Super Bowl this year, the 49ers can’t exactly be discontent with their QB situation. For all the criticism Purdy receives, his four playoff wins and 17-4 regular season record speak for themselves.
