One of the NFL’s most disappointing teams of 2023 may add Jon Gruden to its staff as part of a coaching overhaul.
The New Orleans Saints entered 2023 as the consensus pick to win the hapless NFC South division. But they finished 9-8 on the year and missed out on the postseason for the third straight year, having lost a tiebreaker on the division to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
According to a report from Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate, the New Orleans Saints “are expected to” make” several adjustments to their coaching staff. Duncan reports that the former Super Bowl-winning head coach could be among the new faces coming to Dennis Allen’s group:
“The Saints are expected to make changes to their coaching staff in the wake of their disappointing 2023 season, and former NFL head coach Jon Gruden is being considered as a possible addition, sources said Monday.
Gruden, a Super Bowl-winning coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, recently visited with Saints officials during the team’s Week 17 road trip to Tampa, Florida, where Gruden has a home. He attended a team meeting the night before the Saints’ game against the Buccaneers and dined with staff, including Loomis, at a local restaurant later that evening, sources said.”
Gruden spent the 2023 season as a consultant on the Saints’ roster. The 60-year-old provided input on the offense ran by new quarterback Derek Carr, who played under Gruden in Oakland/Las Vegas from 2018 to 2021.
Gruden resigned from the Raiders in the midst of the 2021 season after emails he wrote containing racist, homophobic and misogynistic language were leaked. He was in the fourth year of a 10-year, $100 million pact handed by Mark Davis back in 2018.

“Chucky” previously coached the Raiders from 1998 to 2001 before getting traded to the Buccaneers. In his first season with Tampa, Gruden led the franchise to a Super Bowl 37 victory over the Raiders.
For his career as an NFL head coach, Gruden went 117-112-0.
