A top NFC club and Super Bowl contender could look at hiring ex-New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick if they underperform again in the postseason.
On Thursday, Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft held a press conference to announce that they had agreed to part ways. The 71-year-old Belichick, a surefire future Hall of Famer, is now the top free agent head coach available.
According to a report from Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda, the Dallas Cowboys could eye Belichick if they have endure disappointing postseason outing under Mike McCarthy:
“At the start of December, I wrote an article saying the word from league insiders was Dan Quinn would take over as head coach of the Cowboys if Dallas did not make a deep run into the playoffs.
Yet many of those same people now tell me that they believe, with Bill Belichick available, that he’s the man the Dallas Cowboys turn to if Jerry Jones is not satisfied with the way his team ends the season. If this comes to fruition, it should surprise no one, like Belichick’s exit from New England.”
Many assume that Belichick won’t want to join a rebuilding team at this phase of his career. The Cowboys, coming off a third straight 12-win season, are built to win now and thus could entice Belichick.
McCarthy has had plenty of regular season success here in Dallas, but he’s just 1-2 in the postseason as their head coach. If Dallas doesn’t at least reach the NFC Championship Game this year, then it just might spell the end of the McCarthy era.
