Suffering injuries during the NFL season can really hurt a team, but suffering them well before the season begins can hurt even more, as Juwan Johnson of the New Orleans Saints is finding out.
Saints reporter Nick Underhill reported that the tight end injured his lower leg and is expected to miss “a good amount of time.”
This is a big loss for the squad, as Juwan Johnson has steadily improved and increased his production on the field over the past few years.
The nature of Johnson’s injury isn’t quite clear, and the public has not been presented with a timetable for his return. This news came out on Wednesday, following the second day of the Saints’ mandatory mini-camp this week. The tight end was absent at practice for the first two days.
In the meantime, the Saints have been scheduled to work out former New Orleans Breakers (USFL) and Arlington Renegades (XFL/UFL) tight end Sal Cannella. He would be much needed as Saints backup tight end Michael Jacobson was forced to leave Tuesday’s practice early but would return on Wednesday, according to John Hendrix of the Saints News Network.

Also in the tight end room is Foster Moreau, returning from last year, as well as undrafted rookie Dallin Holker, who reportedly shined brightly at last month’s OTA sessions.
Saints Tight End Juwan Johnson Signed 2-Year Deal Just Before The 2023 Season
New Orleans Saints tight end Juwan Johnson signed a 2-year year contract extension with the Saints months before the 2023 season.
It was well deserved as he was coming off a career-best performance in 2022 in which he had 42 catches for 508 yards and seven touchdowns, per ESPN.com.
Unfortunately, a calf injury caused him to miss four games in 2023, and he started the season quietly before exploding at the end.
Johnson finished the season with 37 catches for 368 yards and four touchdowns.
