The New England Patriots reportedly have a firm idea in mind of what they’ll do with the third overall pick in next month’s 2024 NFL Draft.
It feels like a virtual lock that USC quarterback Caleb Williams will go first overall to the Chicago Bears. The Washington Commanders will likely take either North Carolina’s Drake Maye or LSU’s Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 pick.
And the Patriots? It apparently comes down to if the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner is available.
According to Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda, word at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine was that the Patriots will “trade back if” Daniels is not available to them at No. 3. Pauline added that several of New England’s scouts “are not fans of Maye.”

For a while, Maye was the overwhelming favorite to go No. 2 to Washington, but it no longer feels like a slam dunk. Many scouts and analysts now rank the LSU dual-threat sensation as a higher prospect than Maye.

If New England doesn’t end up with Daniels, then trading back makes perfect sense. Surely, several QB-needy teams will be interested in trading up into the No. 3 spot for Maye, and a rebuilding team like New England can use all of the picks it can get.
In his final year of college football, Daniels threw for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns against only four interceptions to go along with 1,134 rushing yards and 10 rushing scores.
