The worst kept secret in the NFL is that the Denver Broncos will be cutting Russell Wilson ahead of free agency. There’s now a specific timeline on when it’ll become official.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, folks around the league believe that the Broncos will officially release the nine-time Pro Bowler “by next week.” 2024 NFL free agency officially begins on Mar. 13 at 4:00 p.m. EST:
“The Broncos made it very clear the Russell Wilson chapter will be over soon. Around the league, people believe Denver will cut him by next week.”
The Broncos benched Wilson for their final two regular season games of 2023 after he refused to adjust the injury guarantees in his contract. Wilson would have been due a whopping $37 million in 2025 if he were to suffer an injury.
After a miserable first year with the Broncos, Wilson turned it around under new head coach Sean Payton. The 35-year-old completed 66.4 percent of pass attempts for 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns against eight interceptions.
But that obviously wasn’t enough to convince the Broncos to give him a third year. And with that, Wilson is set to hit the open market for the first time in his career.
