Longtime New England Patriots assistant and former Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia is reportedly in the running for a position on the Philadelphia Eagles’ coaching staff.
And if he lands the job? It will make for a rather awkward situation in Philly.
According to Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald, Patricia “has a shot” to join the Eagles’ defensive coaching staff. Guregian added that it would “presumably” be a linebackers coach position.
This is noteworthy because if Patricia comes to Philadelphia, he’ll reunite with Pro Bowl corner Darius Slay. Patricia coached Slay in Detroit from 2018 to 2019, and you may recall the latter’s stories about his former head coach.

Slay has been a mainstay on the Eagles’ defense, helping them to a Super Bowl 57 appearance this season, where they narrowly dropped a heartbreaker to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Patricia was named the head coach of the Lions in 2018. He went 13-29-1 during his tenure there. Patricia was fired after the team lost seven of its first 11 games, recording only losing seasons during his tenure there.
Bill Belichick then brought Patricia back to his coaching staff in 2021. Curiously, Belichick named Patricia and Joe Judge the co-offensive play-callers in 2022 even though their backgrounds are on defense and special teams, respectively.
Belichick has since hired old friend Bill O’Brien to take over as the offensive coordinator. Now we wait and see if Belichick is about to lose one of his favorite assistants to the reigning NFC Champions.
