One of the biggest surprises of the 2024 NFL offseason was the lack of a contract extension for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
The 31-year-old Dak Prescott is entering the fourth and final year of a $160 million contract extension he signed in the 2021 offseason. And despite a ton of word salad from owner Jerry Jones, the two sides haven’t come close to reaching an agreement on a new deal.
The lack of a new deal for Prescott is also noteworthy because he has no-trade and no-tag clauses in his contract, so the three-time Pro Bowler can test free agency next March for the first tie in his career.
Insider Ian Rapoport provided a significant update on Dak Prescott’s contract status on NFL Network Wednesday.
According to Rapoport, the two sides have discussed a possible deal that would make him the league’s “highest-paid quarterback.” However, Rapoport believes “the two sides are not close” as Sunday’s opener against the Cleveland Browns approaches.

Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb also needed a new deal heading into the last week of August before signing a four-year extension worth $160 million. Star linebacker Micah Parsons is also eligible for an extension, but nothing appears imminent on that front.
The Cowboys kick off their season in Cleveland at 4:25 p.m. EST on Sunday.
Dak Prescott Will Get Paid Big-Time By Somebody
Whether the Cowboys or somebody else pay him, Dak Prescott promises to land a significant contract between now and next offseason.
Prescott’s new deal will easily be over $200 million, seeing that 36-year-old Kirk Cousins got $180 million over four years from the Atlanta Falcons despite suffering a season-ending Achilles tear last year.
Also, less experienced quarterbacks in Jordan Love, Tua Tagovailoa and Trevor Lawrence landed extensions worth over $200 million this offseason. As long as Prescott puts together another season up to his standards, his next deal could easily push $250 illion.
