Earlier this week, the Arizona Cardinals closed the chapter on the tulmultous offseason by agreeing to give Kyler Murray a five-year extension worth $230.5 million, including $160 million in guarantees.
The two-sport star clearly made the correct decision when he chose football over baseball. However, the team made damn sure baseball would be in his rearview mirror.
The Cardinals inserted some baseball-related language in Murray’s new megadeal, according to John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM in Phoenix. Cardinals added language in the deal that voids guaranteed money if he decides to play baseball.
Gambadoro adds that the extension does not come with a no-trade clause, meaning Murray wouldn’t have to sign off on any potential trades in the future.
Kyler Murray had gone ninth overall to the A’s in the 2018 MLB draft and even signed a $4.6 million deal, but he decided to return to college for one more football season. After winning the Big 12 title and the Heisman Trophy while leading Oklahoma to the College Football Playoff, Murray decided that he would stick with football instead.
Murray’s contract extension carries an annual value of $46.1 million, the second-highest yearly average behind only Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers.

He is coming off a 2021 campaign that saw him complete 69.2% of his passes for 3,787 yards and 24 touchdowns to 10 interceptions, helping lead Arizona to an 11-6 mark and a playoff berth for the first time since 2015.
He chipped in an additional 423 yards on the ground with five scores on 88 carries.
