Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett reportedly refused to back up Mason Rudolph for Sunday’s pivotal Week 17 road tilt against the Seattle Seahawks.
According to longtime Steelers reporter Mark Madden of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the second-year QB “100 percent refused to” back up Rudolph. Madden added that this is known among other Steelers writers, but they simply won’t write about it.
Steelers reporter Mark Kaboly of The Athletic indicated that he heard something similar during his appearance on The Fan Morning Show (h/t Allison Koehler of Steelers Wire).
“I’m very, very highly skeptical that it was 100 percent Mike Tomlin’s decision that Kenny Pickett did not dress yesterday…There are some things you know and some things you can write, and there are some things you know you can’t write.”
Pickett suffered an ankle injury in the Steelers’ Week 13 road loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Mitch Trubisky started the next two games (both Steeler losses), prompting Mike Tomlin to give Rudolph the starting nod for Week 16 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Rudolph has provided a much-needed spark in the Steelers offense, leading them to consecutive wins and back-to-back 30-point outbursts. The Steelers will visit the Baltimore Ravens in a must-win game on Saturday.
