New York Jets fans are excited to have their QB of the future in Zach Wilson, but it would be nice if the team had a nice veteran presence behind him to teach him the ropes and to also step in if things go off the rails.
Jets beat reporter Brian Costello of the New York Post shed some light on that fact when he spoke on the Nick Foles situation.
“The Jets and Bears have had discussions, according to sources, but it seems unlikely that any deal will happen. The problem is Foles’ contract,” Costello wrote. “He is due to make $4 million this season and next. The Bears surely would have to eat some of that contract to facilitate a trade. Some may argue the Jets should wait to see if the Bears cut Foles, but that seems unlikely…”
Foles is due to make $8 million over the next two seasons, which is an expensive price to pay for a backup quarterback, no matter his potential value. Chicago would have to eat some of the 32-year-old’s contract in order to facilitate a trade with the Jets or any other team.
With Andy Dalton entering training camp as Chicago’s starting quarterback and Justin Fields waiting in the wings as his successor, there is no longer a place for Foles with the Bears.
“If Chicago does get motivated to move Foles, the Jets have three sixth-round picks next year and could part with one of them for Foles.”
