The 2024 NFL trade deadline is still three weeks away, but Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has already decided on how he’ll approach it.
Jerry Jones is facing plenty of calls from fans and pundits to make significant changes following a humiliating 47-9 home loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Jones told reporters that he wasn’t thinking about firing head coach Mike McCarthy, and he had already decided against acting at the trade deadline.
Per The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Jones said the Cowboys wouldn’t be “active” at the Nov. 5 trade deadline. Jones added that coaching and coordinator changes aren’t being explored now.
So as always, Jerry Jones believes there is no need to change an obviously flawed roster. It’s not surprising considering that his idea of going “all-in” this offseason was to make zero big splashes while bidding farewell to several key starters from 2023.

The Cowboys went almost two full seasons without losing in the regular season at home, but they’re 0-3 at AT&T Stadium this season. Their three victories have come on the road, though defeating the one-win Cleveland Browns (Week 1) and New York Giants (Week 4) isn’t all that impressive.
Dallas is on a bye this week before they travel to San Francisco to take on the rival 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Week 8. At this rate, it’s going to take several more humiliating losses for Jerry Jones to consider any significant changes, but history tells us he’ll stand pat and let the season play out.
Jerry Jones Can’t Accept He’s The Problem
Jones is the owner and the general manager of the Cowboys. If he’s the genius he thinks he is, why haven’t the Cowboys reached an NFC Championship Game since 1995? Why does Dallas have two playoff wins since Dak Prescott’s arrival in 2016? Why is the team barely 3-3 with a roster that he thinks is good enough to win a championship?
As long as Jones continues to do things his way, the Dallas Cowboys will remain mired in mediocrity. He just can’t accept that it’s his decision making that has put the team in this spot and far away from a Super Bowl.
