Big changes could be coming to the Washington Football Team’s ownership group, as rapper Shawn Carter, aka Jay-Z, is reportedly setting himself up to purchase a stake in the team.
According to Burgundy Blog, Carter is actively divesting assets to properly position himself to make such a purchase. At the moment, there’s no timeline set for the transaction, which is not a sure thing just yet.
In March, it as reported by ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio that Snyder had taken out a $450-million debt waiver to buy out his minority partners and take possession of their 40-percent share. But as Florio suggested, there would eventually come a time when Snyder would have so sell some of his stake to make that money back. And in the same conversation, he stated that Jay-Z could be the one who buys in.
“Listen, Dan Snyder just had to take out a debt to buy off the rest of the team,” Finlay said. “Eventually he’s going to sell out parcels of this team again. That’s how it works. You’re gonna get some cash.”
“We know that Jay-Z is working with the NFL. There’s no way he doesn’t want ownership in the NFL,” he continued. “I believe he had ownership in the Brooklyn Nets at one point. He no longer does, I believe. And just start listening to some of these things.”
Dan Snyder is easily the NFL’s most hated owner. But bringing along someone like Jay-Z could be what WTF needs to help the franchise win back some love and respect.
