The New York Jets fully expect to acquire quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but a trade isn’t yet a foregone conclusion.
This week, Rodgers revealed his intention to play for NY next season. However, the Packers still need to agree to a deal before anything can happen on that front. While the NFC outfit is ready to part ways with the veteran and plans to move forward with Jordan Love as their QB, they aren’t just going to let Rodgers leave.
According to multiple sources, Green Bay is looking to get a first-round pick out of the deal. They’re also thought to be intent on getting something for 2025 contingent on whether Rodgers plays a second season in New York.
“The Packers want more than a first-round pick as part of the base deal. They want protection in 2025, in the event Rodgers plays in 2024. And that’s more than the Jets believe they should surrender for a player the Packers no longer want.”

There is still the matter of a contract Rodgers signed with the team so he’s definitely not the one in charge, but there are things he could do to force the franchise into trading him
He could simply uphold his end of the deal and return to play for another season, doing the bare minimum. In such a case, Love’s ascent would be stunted while the Packers would have to pay Rodgers $60 million.

There’s also the option of retirement. Rodgers could call quits on his career, leaving Green Bay with nothing.
Of course, there’s plenty of time for the teams to iron something mutually beneficial out. It would be pretty distasteful to see Rodgers have to leave the Packers on poor terms after a relationship that has lasted 18 years.
