A former NFL head coach is reportedly “interested in” filling the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator vacancy that just opened up.
On Thursday, the Washington Commanders hired former Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as their new head coach. Quinn served as the team’s DC for three years under head coach Mike McCarthy.
According to Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News, former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer “is interested in” taking the Cowboys’ DC role. Zimmer’s NFL coaching career began with the Cowboys back in 1994, and he remained on their staff until 2006.
Zimmer coached the Vikings from 2014 to 2021, compiling a 72-56-1 record. He led Minnesota to three postseason appearances, two NFC North division crowns and a trip to the 2017 NFC Championship Game.
The 67-year-old was the defensive backs coach for the 1994 Cowboys’ team under head coach Barry Switzer that won Super Bowl 30 to become a dynasty. He also held the defensive coordinator position from 2000 to 2006 before spending the 2007 season as the Atlanta Falcons’ DC.
Zimmer then joined the Cincinnati Bengals and served as the DC under Marvin Lewis from 2008 to 2013. His success there led to Zimmer getting his first NFL head coaching position with Minnesota in 2014.
