A new report provides details on quarterback Mac Jones quickly falling out of favor among his New England Patriots teammates.
Many expect the Patriots to move on from Jones following a miserable 2023 season that saw him lose his starting job to Bailey Zappe late in the year. The Patriots have already made one drastic change by parting ways with legendary head coach Bill Belichick, who was succeeded by Jerod Mayo.
According to a report from Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal (h/t Jordan Daly of NBC Sports Boston), Jones left some teammates unhappy after showing up to Mayo’s introductory press conference in workout gear.
On top of that, some teammates thought Jones poorly handled his benching. Here’s what a source told Bedard on Jones:
“He was in his workout gear, which is ironic since he cleared the entire locker at the end of the season…I mean, come on man…Everyone’s watched him play, they’ve watched him act like a prima donna. The team is sick of it, everyone’s sick of it.”
But Mark Daniels of MassLive.com clarified that Jones always does his workouts at Gillette Stadium, hence why he showed up to Mayo’s conference in workout clothes.

Regardless of how the locker room views him as a player and teammate, it’s quite obvious that Jones needs a fresh start. Bill Belichick made the grave mistake by making Matt Patricia and Joe Judge the offensive play-callers in 2022, and the legendary head coach failed to provide Jones with any Pro Bowl-caliber pieces on offense.
The Patriots hold the No. 3 pick in this year’s draft that is loaded with promising quarterback prospects. Zappe might end up staying on, but Jones’ time in New England is surely coming to a close.
