If the New England Patriots end up trading quarterback Mac Jones, which is inevitable, they’ll reportedly receive nothing more than a late-round draft pick.
Speaking to a trio of front office executives, Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald were told that the Patriots will get “around a fifth-round” draft choice in return for the 2021 first-round pick.
“Three front-office executives told the Herald quarterback Mac Jones should fetch around a fifth-round pick in trade talks with other teams. Another AFC evaluator suggested the Patriots might be lucky to land a sixth-rounder. Jones is reportedly expected to be traded this offseason, as the team plans to upgrade its quarterbacks room.”
Jones lost his starting job to backup Bailey Zappe late in the season, and the Patriots hold the No. 3 pick in this year’s draft. With at least one of USC’s Caleb Williams, North Carolina’s Drake Maye and LSU’s Jayden Daniels guaranteed to be available, New England is expected to take a new QB with their first-round selection.
Jones isn’t the only other quarterback likely to switch teams in the coming weeks. The Denver Broncos are expected to cut Russell Wilson ahead of free agency, and Minnesota Vikings Pro Bowler Kirk Cousins still doesn’t have a new deal with the open market set to open in 10 days.
