A new report details what Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield could make on his next contract.
The first overall pick of 2018 is coming off a career year for the Bucs, leading them to the NFC South division crown after throwing for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns against only 10 interceptions.
Mayfield took a one-year “prove it” deal with the Buccaneers last year, and now he’s in line to secure the bag in the coming weeks (be it from Tampa or somebody else).
According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, league sources think Mayfield’s deal will be slightly higher than the three-year, $75 million extension Geno Smith signed with the Seattle Seahawks last year:
“It’s possible, if not likely, the Buccaneers would value Mayfield more than any other NFL team. But that doesn’t mean they can lowball him and run the risk of disrespecting the quarterback. A reasonable starting point, according to league sources, would be a tick above Geno Smith’s three-year, $75 million deal with Seattle last year that allowed for a Seahawks out after one season…
Would anyone else in the NFL be willing to pay Mayfield that? Perhaps not. But he wants to be in Tampa and the Buccaneers want him back. And that deal, according to league sources, is “fair.”
Jones’ suggestion here feels like a fair price for Mayfield. He’s not exactly young anymore at age 28, and the former first overall pick has been inconsistent over his six-year career.

Nobody is going to give Mayfield anything close to a $100 million-plus contract, but something close to $75 million wouldn’t be too shabby considering where Mayfield was a year ago.
