Any NFL team hoping to land the first overall pick from the Chicago Bears will have to give up “historic” compensation, according to a report.
The Bears hold the first overall pick via the Carolina Panthers, who surrendered their 2024 first-round selection as part of last year’s blockbuster move to get Alabama quarterback Bryce Young at No. 1.
In a normal year, taking USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the first overall pick would be a no-brainer. But third-year QB Justin Fields just pieced together the best season of his young career, so one can make the case that Chicago should trade the pick and build around Fields.
However, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Bears would have to receive “a historic haul” in order to trade the No. 1 pick:
“If someone is going to pry the No. 1 overall selection away from the Bears, they are going to have to pay — and pay a lot.
Chicago would need a historic haul of draft picks and overall compensation to move off the first pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, sources say. In the words of one source, it would have to be “crazy.”
That indicates the Bears, who received the pick in a mammoth trade last offseason with the Panthers, are more likely than not to make the pick and land their new franchise QB.”
If the Bears are eyeing such a haul for the first overall pick, that’s a good indicator that they are keen on taking a new QB with the selection. And if that happens, GM Ryan Poles will get additional draft compensation when he trades Fields to another QB-needy team.
