San Francisco 49ers wideout Deebo Samuel is supposed to take advantage of the wide receiver market, which has absolutely burst this summer. However, as we approach training camp and August, no deal for the versatile weapon has been completed.
In fact, it is still unknown whether Samuel will appear at training camp next Tuesday, when veterans are due to report.
While on The Rich Eisen Show this Wednesday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided an update on Samuel’s situation and revealed that Samuel’s biggest issue with the 49ers is the way he’s used in Kyle Shanahan’s offense.
“Do they show him a plan going forward where he’s not going to be in a position to be worn down and have his career shorten, which I think was the worry before” Rapoport said. “He’s a dynamic player, he’s a great weapon, but he’s not a running back. And he doesn’t want to be a running back.”
In his breakout third season in the NFL, Samuel helped them go on a playoff run while doing almost everything there is to do on offense. Samuel finished fifth in the league in receiving yards (1,405 yards) while leading the league in yards per catch (18.2) and setting the NFL record for the most rushing touchdowns in a season by a wide receiver with eight.
In three postseason games, Samuel had 154 yards and a touchdown receiving to go along with 137 yards and a touchdown rushing.
