Deebo Samuel wants out, but the 49ers have not shown any interest in making that happen. That could all be changing soon.
Last week, Samuel told ESPN’s Jeff Darlington that he had requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers. Samuel didn’t provide a reason for his request.
According to NFL insider Tony Pauline, these rumors are “heating up” as we approach this week’s NFL draft.
Coming just days before the NFL Draft, the timing of Samuel’s request has the potential to shake up the league.
With Samuel entering the last season of his rookie contract, it feels as though the 49ers playmaker is rightfully looking for a new deal of his own. While the 49ers could hold firm and keep Samuel, there are no doubt teams will be interested in taking him if San Francisco makes him available, and with the draft set to begin on April 28, a deal could be imminent if the price is right.
The team that is being considered the ‘front-runner’ for Deebo’s service are the New York Jets.

“49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel recently requested a trade, and most people in the league consider the Jets the front-runners, though even some interested teams don’t expect the 49ers to move off Samuel in the short term. Multiple teams are calling, and it’s believed San Francisco is at least listening. I’m told the Lions and Packers also have interest. As one source pointed out, “It would take so much for Kyle [Shanahan] to trade him to Green Bay,” given the rivalry both in the NFC and between the two coaches, Shanahan and Matt LaFleur.”
In 2021, Samuel led the NFL in yards-per-reception and yards-per-target. He also finished the season with 14 total touchdowns.
