The Dallas Cowboys have revealed their interesting plans for third-string quarterback Trey Lance heading into the 2024 NFL season.
Despite a shaky preseason, Trey Lance made the Cowboys’ final 53-man roster. The third overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft is the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart, behind Pro Bowler Dak Prescott and veteran Cooper Rush.
Per Cowboys reporter Clarence Hill Jr. from alldlls.com, Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that Rush will be the No. 2 quarterback. McCarthy added that the team wants to continue developing Lance, whom they feel has made progress.
Before the start of last season, the Cowboys acquired Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers for a 2024 fourth-round pick. Lance suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2 of the 2022 season and lost his starting job after rookie Brock Purdy emerged to stardom and led San Fran to an NFC Championship Game appearance.
In the Cowboys’ final preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Lance completed 33 of 49 pass attempts for 323 yards, one touchdown and five interceptions to go along with a game-high 90 rushing yards and one rushing score.

Trey Lance saw eight total game appearances and made four starts over his two seasons in San Francisco. He went 2-2 and completed 54.9 percent of pass attempts for 797 yards, five touchdowns against three interceptions.
The Cowboys open their 2024 season on Sunday with a road contest against Myles Garrett’s Cleveland Browns. This game also marks Tom Brady’s debut as an analyst for the “NFL on FOX”.
Trey Lance Is Worth Holding Onto For Now
The Cowboys have yet to extend Dak Prescott, who’s entering the final year of a $160 million deal he signed in 2021. If he leaves in free agency next year, might McCarthy and company decide to give Lance a shot as their starter in 2025?
It’s too early to predict the future. But given Lance’s high upside, the Cowboys are making the right call to maintain and develop him for now. A decision on his future can be made at a later date.
