Dak Prescott is certainly betting on himself and is surely looking for a rather large payday to fall in line to how he’s been producing on the field.
According to Clarence Hill of the Star Telegram, the Dallas Cowboys and QB Dak Prescott nearly agreed to an extension worth $33 million a year back in September.
However, Hill stated talks would soon break down after Prescott had a hot start to the 2019 season and he was presumably looking to top Seahawks QB Russell Wilson‘s $35 million a year as the NFL’s highest-paid player.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has made it known that the team does want to sign Prescott to a long-term deal.
“He deserves everything he has coming,” Jones said. “We got real, real, real close there to start the season and just didn’t get it finished up. He’s so laser-focused on wanting to win football games and compete that he really didn’t want the distraction once we didn’t get it done in that first week of going back and forth with the contract. We just got to move forward. He’s our quarterback of the future. I’ll take him any time when you go to war against these guys. We’re fortunate to have him.”
Back In April, Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones insisted that a deal with Prescott must be “team friendly.”
“At the same time, and I know Dak wants this, you want a supporting cast,” Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. “That’s the way to go down as being one of the great quarterbacks to ever play the game: win championships.
“There’s been a lot of good players who won a lot of games and have good stats, but if you don’t have championships, certainly there’s an empty feeling there. I know Dak. His No. 1 goal here is to win Super Bowl championships. He’s a winner; he’s a leader.
“I just feel good that we’ll find our way to a place that the contract enables us to surround him with a great supporting cast which a lot of it’s in place. If you look at our offensive line, look at our receiving core, you look at Zeke: a lot of it’s there. Obviously with [Jason] Witten coming back and some young tight ends, certainly that’s a nice spot for us, too. So we’ve just gotta keep building on that and be able to fit Dak in.
