The Washington Commanders could reportedly fetch a day two pick for quarterback Sam Howell.
The 23-year-old Howell was Washington’s starting quarterback in 2023. He played all 17 games and completed 63.4 percent of pass attempts for 3,946 yards for 21 touchdowns and a league-leading 21 interceptions.
Washington is widely expected to use the No. 2 pick on a quarterback, presumably either Caleb Williams (USC), Drake Maye (North Carolina) or Jayden Daniels (USC). The Chicago Bears own the No. 1 selection via the Carolina Panthers.
According to Ralph Vacchiano of FOX Sports, several teams could have interest in Howell. Not only that, but some believe Washington could get a third-round draft choice (and possibly more) for the North Carolina product:
“What about Howell? Multiple NFL sources believe several teams would be interested in trading for the 23-year-old who threw for 3,946 yards and 21 touchdowns in 17 starts last season (albeit with an NFL-worst 21 interceptions). They could potentially get a third-round pick for him — maybe more — if they decide they’re willing to deal him sometime around the draft.”
Howell put up strong numbers on a Washington team that won just four games, but the turnovers and sacks (a league-leading 65) obviously need to be addressed. If he lands in the right system, Howell could develop into a quality starter elsewhere.
