The Chicago Bears are reportedly getting very close to making a final decision at quarterback as the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine draws closer.
Chicago owns the first overall pick, which they obtained from the Carolina Panthers in last year’s move up for Alabama signal-caller Bryce Young. The Bears now have to decide between keeping starter Justin Fields or trading him and using the No. 1 pick on somebody else (likely USC’s Caleb Williams).
According to a report from Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, it’s believed that the Bears will “have the plan in place” for next week’s NFL Scouting Combine:
“The Bears are meeting over the next couple weeks to finalize plans at quarterback, with the expectation that they’ll have the plan in place in Indianapolis next week.”
Fields made headlines on Monday night when several fans on X/Twitter noticed that he unfollowed the Bears on Instagram. The Ohio State product threw for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions to go along with 657 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.
For what it’s worth, Breer added that the Bears received “inquiries” on Fields, though the team apparently hasn’t actively “shopped” the 2021 first-round pick.

Fields showed signs of growing into a star this past season, thanks to an improved supporting cast which featured the arrival of superstar wideout D.J. Moore. But Williams has a higher ceiling than Fields, and Chicago would enjoy the luxury of having a new franchise QB on a team-friendly rookie deal for 4-5 years.
At any rate, Breer’s latest report indicates that the Bears’ final decision is coming sooner rather than later.
