We are now in the month of May and sports fans are still hoping that the NBA can finish out its season, the NHL can finish, and Major League Baseball can actually get started.
The coronavirus pandemic hasn’t really stopped the NFL since the season remains months away. According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, a source close to the league says there is an ‘extremely small’ chance that things may get canceled.
So far, the NFL has had to change up their draft to being virtual instead of being in Las Vegas as originally planned and outright postpone the annual owner meetings and free agency was handled a bit differently than usual. Due to the inability to conduct physicals, some free agents remain unsigned.
Florio laid out a scenrio where the entire season could be pushed back three weeks going around.
“This doesn’t mean that training camps will open in late July/early August or that the regular season will start on Thursday, September 10, with the Chiefs raising a banner and hosting a team like the Patriots. In order to get to the point where the governors of all states with NFL stadiums will agree to opening the doors and letting anyone who chooses to attend show up, the start of the season may have to be delayed by a few weeks.
That’s why there’s already talk of a February 28 Super Bowl in Tampa. A three-week delay in the Super Bowl would accommodate a three-week delay to the start of the season. Or a four-week delay if bye weeks are eliminated. Or a five-week delay if the Super Bowl is played one week after the conference championship games.”
For the time being, the 2020 NFL season is scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 10. The Super Bowl is currently scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 7.
