After starting the season so well, the Carolina Panthers fell off the map completely during the 2018 season and a lot of it had to do with the health of Cam Newton.
He did not look like himself throwing the football, so the team would shut him down to not risk any further injury to him. As it turns out, they probably should’ve sat him much sooner, because according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter — Cam could sit out the entire 2019 season to rest his injured shoulder.
Cam had been dealing with that injured shoulder right after the team faced the Pittsburgh Steelers in November.
Panthers owner David Tepper compared their situation to what Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck went through when it basically took him 2 years to get him back to where he was physically.
“If you told me he took a year off and could recover and be fully recovered and everything else, and that’s what it took, an extra year, why wouldn’t you do [that]? Now we would have to do other things, right? We’d have to go out and get another quarterback. If you could find me some more cap space I’d appreciate that.”
Luck would return in full health this past season and toss 39 touchdowns, the second most of his career, during a 10-6 regular season where they would win a Wild Card game against the Houston Texans.

The Panthers now sit with a decision during the offseason on whether to follow through with the plan and throw caution to the wind.
