The wide receiver position has become more important in the NFL over the past few years and it’s showing with the amount of money being dished out to the top players.
Overthecap.com, which tracks NFL player contracts, says 46 NFL wide receivers now make at least $5 million in average salary per year. 23 of those make at least $10 million.
The highest paid receiver in the NFL is the Atlanta Falcons’ Julio Jones, who currently brings in $22 million per season. That very well could be changing soon.
Arizona’s lopsided deal for Houston Texans Pro Bowler DeAndre Hopkins was one of the most shocking moves seen in the NFL in quite a longtime. The cardinals want to make sure that Hopkins is there for the foreseeable future.
Head coach Bill O’Brien stated that Hopkins wanted a new deal which was the sole reason he was traded, and even though he wasn’t appreciated by his former team, he will be appreciated by his current one.
According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Arizona is set to pay Hopkins $20-plus million annually once the two sides finalize a contract extension.
“They’re probably going to pay him around $20 million a year or more,” Rapoport said Thursday.
