It was already a huge question as to whether Cam Newton would get his job back upon returning from injury, but that conversation stopped after the team put him on injured reserve.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Carolina Panthers quarterback is now considering surgery to repair the Lisfranc injury in his foot and could undergo the procedure fairly soon. This will more than definitely knock him out for the remainder of the season and give Kyle Allen a clear head to know that he is the starter for the remainder of the 2019 season.
Rapoport says Newton wants to continue his playing career, but also writes “it remains highly unlikely that he’ll be with the Panthers in 2020.”
Even though he is due $18.6 million in 2020, Rapoport thinks Newton is ‘quite trade-able’ and thinks that is the most likely option.
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports added later that Panthers ownership is unsure about giving Newton another long-term extension before his foot injury.
Newton has appeared in just 2 games in 2019, only completing 50 out of 89 passes for 572 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He will likely end his season with negative rush yards as he sits at 5 rushes for -2 yards.
