The Denver Broncos’ decision to bench quarterback Russell Wilson for the final two games reportedly isn’t because of money.
According to CBS Sports’ NFL insider Josina Anderson, head coach Sean Payton is benching Wilson strictly for “football” reasons. Payton has been worried about the offense’s struggles over the last four games, and a source told Anderson the hope is that new starting QB Jarrett Stidham will provide “a spark”.
Regarding the speculation about Wilson being benched because of his contract (more on that below), a source told Anderson, “if it was a financial thing”, then Wilson wouldn’t be dressing as the backup QB.
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Wilson would be guaranteed $37 million for the 2025 season if he suffered a serious injury. That’s why it makes sense for the Broncos to bench Wilson for the final two games, especially with the postseason essentially out of reach now.
Needless to say, the Broncos have a difficult decision to make at quarterback this offseason.

Wilson has shown vast improvement this year under Payton compared to 2022 with Nathaniel Hackett, but his age (35), injury history and mammoth contract may prompt the organization to move in another direction next year.
Through 15 games this season, Wilson has completed 66.4 percent of pass attempts for 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns against only eight interceptions to go along with 341 rushing yards and three rushing scores.
