The NFL has done a lot over the past few years to showcase its talents in global markets. One of the league’s more recent endeavors will see a week one matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
This is slated to be the first NFL game played on South American soil, yet it hasn’t gone according to plan. The league has received many complaints about the players’ safety, as Brazil’s crime rates are climbing to an all-time high.
One of the faces of the Eagles’ defense, star cornerback Darius Slay, has recently voiced his concerns over the match-up in the country. “I do not want to go to Brazil… They told us we can’t do too much… because the crime rate is crazy,” Slay said.
And it seemed as though comments from Eagles receiver AJ Brown was the straw that broke the camel’s back as the government put out a statement saying, “To guarantee the safety of the players, the military police will reinforce the number of personnel upon arrival of the delegations at the Guarulhos Airport and escort the teams to their hotels, training sites and the stadium.”

Brazil also mentioned that escorts will be provided to wherever the players need to go, and a pre-game sweep of the stadium where the week one game will occur will ensure the safety of everyone involved.
The crime rates are high, and the playing conditions may not be stable as Sao Paulo and its surrounding area have been blanketed in smoke due to the fires in the Amazon Rain Forest that’s been burning since 2022.

While the players may continue to be concerned for their safety and health, the NFL still has yet to cancel or move the week one showdown, meaning NFL fans should be ready to see Jalen Hurts and Jordan Love battle it out for week one supremacy.
