One NFL head coach doesn’t view Caleb Williams as a shoo-in to go first overall to the Chicago Bears in next week’s draft.
Since his 2022 Heisman Trophy-winning season, Williams has been the overwhelming favorite to go first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. Practically everyone expects the Chicago Bears, who obtained the No. 1 pick via the Carolina Panthers, to use it on Williams.
But one anonymous NFL coach told NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero that they believe the Bears’ decision with the No. 1 pick comes down to Williams and Michigan’s JJ McCarthy, whose stock has risen considerably over the last two months:
“You’re never going to be in that spot again, so you better get the right guy,. When [McCarthy] did throw it and he had to throw it, it was pretty impressive, man. He beat Alabama — he had to make big-time throws in that game, and he did. If I was Chicago, I’d be bringing in Caleb and J.J. this week and grinding the s— out of those two. Because there’s not enough evidence to say Caleb is clearly No. 1.”
If the Bears are truly leaning toward McCarthy, then things get a lot more interesting. Chicago GM Ryan Poles could trade the No. 1 pick for a king’s ransom and still have more than enough draft capital to make another deal that ensures he gets McCarthy.

Williams is the No. 1 quarterback prospect in this class. McCarthy, LSU’s Jayden Daniels and North Carolina’s Drake Maye are viewed as the next-best prospects in this class, with Oregon’s Bo Nix and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. also candidates to go in the first round.
The Washington Commanders will most certainly take a quarterback at No. 2, but things get interesting from there. The New England Patriots (No. 3) and Arizona Cardinals (No. 4) have both publicly expressed that they’ll consider offers for their first-round picks.
Chicago Bears Should Keep It Simple & Draft Caleb Williams
The Bears have had more than three months to consider their options. But unless Poles gets an out-of-this world offer for the No. 1 selection, he simply can’t overthink it.
The No. 1 pick has to be Williams, who has the skill set to help this franchise re-emerge as a powerhouse after spending the better part of the last 30 years in mediocrity. With Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, Cole Kmet, D’Andre Swift and Khalil Herbert in the fold, the pieces are there for Williams to produce immediately.
So for Chicago, this needs to be an easy choice: Take the best guy available in Caleb Williams.
