To say that the Las Vegas Raiders quickly came to regret the signing of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would be a giant understatement.
In the offseason, the Raiders handed the veteran signal-caller a three-year contract worth $72.75 million. The contract was panned from the get-go, given Garoppolo’s injury history (he’s only played one full season, back in 2019) and inconsistent production.
Sure enough, the Raiders saw enough after six games and benched Garoppolo in favor of rookie Aidan O’Connell following a Week 8 loss to the Detroit Lions. GM Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels, the ones who brought Garoppolo over to Sin City in the first place, were fired after the loss to Detroit.
There is speculation growing around that Jimmy G’s old team, the New England Patriots, could be a target for the QB-needy club in 2024. As noted by the ML Football X/Twitter account, Garoppolo has the eighth-best odds of being the Patriots’ starting QB next year at BetOnline.
Last month, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reported that Garoppolo could be an option for the Patriots if a) they miss out on the chance to draft USC’s Caleb Williams or North Carolina’s Drake Maye and if b) he’s cut by the Raiders:
“The Patriots can go the veteran route. They could monitor Kyler Murray’s situation with the Cardinals and either attempt to trade for him or wait for his potential release. They could try to trade for Chicago’s Justin Fields, sign free-agent Kirk Cousins or Jimmy Garoppolo if/when he’s released.”

Garoppolo was drafted in the second round by the Patriots back in 2014. He won both his starts with the Pats (back in 2016) and captured two Super Bowl championships as Tom Brady’s backup in 2014 and 2016.
