And then there were four…
We’ve all been waiting patiently for Aaron Rodgers to make his decision. Those close to the situation have said that the reigning back-to-back MVP has been doing an awful lot of flip-flopping as he makes one of the most important decisions of his career thus far. And now, the latest report from NBC’s Mike Florio suggests that Rodgers’ decision is down to three teams.
The first is perhaps the most obvious, and that would be a return to the only team he’s known: The Green Bay Packers. As for the other four, they’re among the usual suspects when it comes to this offseason’s quarterback trade rumors. And they’re also all AFC teams, as the Packers would rather not deal their star quarterback within the conference.
Those other three options for Rodgers are the Denver Broncos, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tennessee Titans, all of whom reportedly have the trade assets lined up to pull a trigger if the opportunity arises.
Among those three teams, it’s been the Broncos whose name has been coming up the most in trade talk surrounding the big-name quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson. Not only are they in desperate need of a quarterback, but they also have plenty of young players to entice the Packers to make a move, while also giving Rodgers plenty of offensive weapons to work with, should he become a Bronco.
As for the Steelers, we’ve all seen how highly Mike Tomlin and Aaron Rodgers think of each other. And with Ben Roethlisberger officially retired, Pittsburgh would be wise to find a star quarterback who could help re-open their window as Super Bowl contenders for another 5 or so years.
Finally, there’s the Titans. Of all four teams, Tennessee probably needs Rodgers the least, as they already have a very successful quarterback in Ryan Tannehill — not to mention, their offense mainly runs through star running back Derrick Henry. But if they were able to swing a move for A-Rod, you’d have to think that any offense that includes him, Henry, A.J. Brown and Julio Jones would immediately be considered an early favorite to hoist the Lombardi Trophy next February.
