Throughout the 2020 season, there were many reports that the San Francisco 49ers will likely look to move on from QB Jimmy Garoppolo.
ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler revealed on the Sunday edition of “SportsCenter” that while the 49ers “still believe in Garoppolo,” they would only move on from him if the Houston Texans get serious with trying to move Deshaun Watson.
Via Bleacher Report:
“I’m told San Fran is looking at potential upgrades, but they still like Jimmy G. He’s 24-9 as a starter, including the playoffs, with the Niners.
They believe they can win with him, but it would take a big swing, like a Deshaun Watson effect here, to make that change. And I’m told that the 49ers are one of the teams that Watson’s at least intrigued by.
A source said, ‘Which quarterback wouldn’t want to be in that offense on that team with all those weapons and Kyle Shanahan?’ So always a possibility, but the Texans have made clear they’re not willing to deal Watson right now.
Garoppolo’s still a viable option for San Fran.”
Due to injury, Jimmy G missed 10 games in 2020 and only recorded 1,096 yards and seven touchdowns with five interceptions.
His best year as a pro came during their Super Bowl run the year before where he tossed finished 2019 with 3,978 passing yards, fourth-best in 49ers history. He also had 27 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
