We are getting ever so closer to the brand new NFL season and Jimmy Garoppolo won’t be getting traded to another franchise after he agreed to come back to the 49ers in a backup role behind first-year starter Trey Lance, according to multiple reports.
Even though some teams likely wanted him on their roster, the 49ers definitely wanted to keep him away from one squad.
NFL reporter Jordan Schultz said Monday that Niners general manager John Lynch did not want to trade Garoppolo to the NFC West rival Seattle Seahawks.
The 49ers did not have much leverage as other teams didn’t believe they were going to keep Garoppolo on their roster as a backup. They have fully committed to Trey Lance, and know how much they would save by releasing him. They clearly shocked everybody with their move to keep him.
The Seahawks will enter the 2022 season with Geno Smith as their starting quarterback. He beat out Drew Lock during the offseason.
Trey Lance, the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, saw minimal playing time in his rookie season when Garoppolo served as the 49ers’ starting quarterback. This year, however, it’s the 22-year-old Lance who will be sliding into the role of QB1 after Shanahan confirmed in July they’d be moving forward with him.
