There are reportedly three teams to watch in the Xavien Howard sweepstakes once the All-Pro cornerback officially hits free agency.
Last week, multiple reports stated that the Dolphins plan to release Howard after June 1 in a move that will clear $18.5 million cap space. And once that happens, a trio of young and promising teams are reportedly possible landing spots for Howard.
According to Sports Illustated, via ML Football, the Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans and Detroit Lions may be suitors for the 30-year-old cornerback.
Last week, ESPN’s D.J. Bien-Aime reported that Howard is interested in signing with the Texans, noting that the ball-hawking specialist is from Houston. Howard grew up in the city and attended high school there.
Howard has been one of football’s elite cornerbacks since his breakout year as a sophomore in 2017. The four-time Pro Bowler has 29 interceptions, 95 pass breakups and four forced fumbles in 100 career games.

In 2023, Howard appeared in 13 games and finished one interception and 12 pass defenses. His efforts helped Miami record a fourth straight winning season, as well as a second consecutive trip to the postseason. However, the Dolphins were eliminated by the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in the Wild Card Round.
The bottom line is that multi-time Pro Bowl corners with Howard’s impressive INT totals don’t come around often, and there promises to be a giant market for him once he officially enters free agency.
