The Kansas City Chiefs and their fans are still boiling over that late call they believe cost them a win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. But it appears they could have gotten punished on multiple fronts on that one controversial play.
Kadarius Toney was hit with a penalty for lining up incorrectly and saw what would have likely been the game-winning touchdown erased from the record books. Toney was standing so far offside that the referee didn’t have a choice.
While the Chiefs aren’t disputing that the wideout was offside, they’re arguing that they should have been warned. Referee Carl Cheffers disagrees, however.
“If it’s egregious enough, it would be beyond a warning,” Cheffers explained after the game. “So really regardless of whether or not he was warned at other times during the day, if it was an egregious alignment to where he was over the ball – whether he had warnings or not – it would still be a foul.”
There was another penalty the refs could have called against the Chiefs on the play as lineman Jawaan Taylor was also lined up incorrectly. They either missed it or simply didn’t point it out.

The Chiefs are now 8-5 for the season following Sunday’s loss, which marks a second straight as they lost to the Green Bay Packers last weekend.
They got the New England Patriots up next.
