An NFL referee is set to make history when he takes to the field for the upcoming Super Bowl 58 in February.
Terry Killens was named as part of the Super Bowl LVIII officiating crew on Tuesday, which will make him the first person in league history to both play in the big game and officiate in it.
The 49-year-old was a third-round pick out of Penn State in 1996, with the Houston Oilers selecting him. A former linebacker, Terry stayed with the team until 2000, moving to the San Francisco 49ers, where he spent two seasons before playing a season with the Seattle Seahawks.
Killens was a backup LB for the 1999 Titans team that fell a yard short in beating “The Greatest Show on Turf” St. Louis Rams. He made one tackle with special teams in that game.
Before taking up a job as an NFL referee, Terry worked in the NCAA’s AAC and the Alliance of American Football.
Things are now set to come full circle as he will be one of the refs at the upcoming Super Bowl.
