Referee Shawn Hochuli just worked the Seahawks-Rams game a days ago, but the NFL decided he didn’t need much of a break, as they threw him out there two days later, for tonight’s game between the 49ers and Titans. That decision became a costly one almost immediately.
During the first quarter, Hochuli called a facemask on the Titans during a play where there was clearly no facemask. Instead, cornerback Kristian Fulton got a hold of 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk’s shoulder pad. But a fatigued Hochuli missed it.
Terrible call. And it could have been a costly one, too, as it set up the 49ers deep in the Titans’ territory. Luckily, Janoris Jenkins was able to come up with a timely red zone interception just a few plays later, keeping the score at 7-0 fo San Fran.
Hopefully this is the only bad call we have to talk about tonight.
